                     TELEGARD PROTOCOL INSTALLATION PACKAGE
                                   Version 6

                       By Martin Pollard - April 23, 1990

                                 ______________

                                  INTRODUCTION
                                 ______________

The Standard version of the Telegard Bulletin Board System (BBS) only
comes with a few file transfer protocols already set up (Xmodem,
Xmodem-CRC, Ymodem and Zmodem). There are also a lot of other
protocols available, but in order to install them, you previously had
to find the protocol program, figure out the documentation, and
install it into Telegard using the Protocol Editor. Tedious work at
best, with no guarantees that the protocol(s) will work.

This package was created to solve those problems. It contains the
latest versions of all the current popular protocol programs, along
with a new PROTOCOL.DAT file and a batch file that takes care of 99%
of the total installation! The following chart shows the protocols
that will become available to your users, and the modes available with
     each:

          Protocol Single File Batch Resume
          ========                 ===========    =====     ======
          Cmodem X - X
          Jmodem X X X
          K9-Xmodem X X X
          Kermit X - -
          Lynx X X X
          MegaLink X X -
          Puma X X X
          SEAlink X - -
          SEAlink Overdrive X - -
          Super8K X X X
          Super8K-G X X X
          TransLink X - -
          WXmodem X - -
          Xmodem X - -
          Xmodem-CRC X - -
          Ymodem X X X
          Ymodem-G * X X X
          Zmodem X X X

          * Ymodem-G is not available with the unregistered version of
DSZ.COM; thus, the entries for Ymodem-G in the protocol
table have been disabled. If you wish to use this protocol,
you will need to register your copy of DSZ.COM and use the
protocol editor to re-enable the Ymodem-G entries.

The SEAlink Overdrive, Super8K-G, and Ymodem-G protocols are suitable
only for direct connect transfers and error-free connections (such as
with two modems that have built-in error correction). You may wish to
remind your users of this fact.

The Zmodem protocol uses the MobyTurbo option introduced with the 1990
versions of DSZ.COM to achieve faster transfer rates, especially with
compressed files (ARC, ZIP, LZH, etc.). This IN NO WAY affects
persons using older versions of DSZ.COM (or the built-in Zmodem of
several communication programs, such as Telix), as DSZ.COM is "smart"
enough to use the standard Zmodem mode if the other end isn't using
MobyTurbo. Also, an error-correcting modem is not required to use
     MobyTurbo, unlike Ymodem-G and Super8K-G.

In addition, five Telegard-format *.MSG files are included -- PROTSDL,
PROTSUL, PROTBDL, PROTBUL, and PROTRES -- that can be placed in the
AFILES directory. These text files will be displayed whenever a user
requests a list of available protocols. They contain Telegard MCI
color codes, and can be modified and enhanced using the Mini-DOS text
editor. (In fact, it is recommended that you do so to "customize"
your system, so that it doesn't have that "generic look".)

                                 ______________

                                  INSTALLATION
                                 ______________

Follow the steps outlined below to perform the installation:

     1. Unpack this archive into your main BBS directory.

     2. Type "INSTALL" and press <ENTER> at the DOS prompt. A small
notice will appear on the screen, along with a reminder that this
only works in the main BBS directory. Press <ENTER> when you are
satisfied things are correct, otherwise press [Ctrl-C] to abort.

     3. The installation batch file will take over from there. It will
copy the new PROTOCOL.DAT file into your GFILES directory, create
a new directory called PROTOCOL off the root directory, and
unpack the protocol programs into the PROTOCOL directory.

Note that only the programs are unpacked into the PROTOCOL
directory, as they are all that is needed. All other files
(documentation, supplemental files, etc.) are left in the
archives. You will have to unpack the archives yourself if you
wish to examine the other files.

     **********************************************************************
*** NOTE: The following steps are MANDATORY! If you do not ***
*** follow them EXACTLY, the protocols WILL NOT WORK! ***
     **********************************************************************

     4. Change to the protocol directory by typing "CD \PROTOCOL" and
          pressing <ENTER>.

     5. Type "SUPERK @" and press <ENTER>. This enters SuperK's
configuration mode, which we will use to tell the program the
location of its support programs (SKA.COM and SUPERK.000) and
where to write the transfer log (SK4.LOG).

At the configuration screen, select option F, "OvlPath", and
enter the full pathname of the PROTOCOL directory (i.e.
"C:\PROTOCOL"). Then select option D, "Logfile Name", and enter
the full pathname of the PROTOCOL directory plus the filename
          "SK4.LOG" (i.e. "C:\PROTOCOL\SK4.LOG"). This change is necessary
in order to prevent multiple copies of SK4.LOG from showing up in
your file directories during batch uploads.

To save the changes and exit the program, press <ENTER> then "Y".
SuperK is now ready to use.

     6. Change to the root directory by typing "CD \" and pressing
          <ENTER>.

     7. You must now change your AUTOEXEC.BAT file (or create one if it
doesn't exist) to add or modify the PATH statement to contain the
protocol directory, which is required in order for Telegard to
execute the programs. Using your favorite text editor, or using
DOS' EDLIN as a last resort, modify your PATH statement to
include the full pathname of the PROTOCOL directory (i.e.
"C:\PROTOCOL"). If you do not have a PATH statement at all, add
one anywhere to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file; if you already have a PATH
statement, append the PROTOCOL pathname onto the end of the PATH
          statement (i.e. ";C:\PROTOCOL").

     8. Reboot your computer to effect the changes.

That's all there is to it! Your new protocols should now be ready to
     roll.

                                9600 BAUD MODEMS
                               __________________

Quite a few Telegard SysOps have reported that the standard protocol
definitions don't work very well (if at all) with 9600 baud modems,
such as the US Robotics Courier HST. To help solve this problem, a
special PROTOCOL.DAT file has been included whose protocol definitions
seem to work better with 9600 baud modems.

To install this new file, execute the "9600BAUD" batch file from the
BBS directory AFTER YOU HAVE INSTALLED OR UPGRADED TO THIS VERSION!
(If you run it BEFORE you do so, the 9600 baud PROTOCOL.DAT file will
be overwritten, and you'll have accomplished nothing!) Like the
upgrade and installation procedures, everything is automatic.

Note that these definitions have not been extensively tested (due to
the fact that I got them second-hand, as I don't yet have a 9600 baud
modem). If you find any problems, or if you can suggest any changes
that would make them work better, I would appreciate it if you would
drop me a line or two.
