This text file lists features and/or fixes that were not
included in the latest revision of the TranScan v5.00 manual.
Also, see the BBS.DOC file for the latest information on running
TranScan with your BBS software.

TranScan v5.07 (September 6, 1994)

Enhancements:
------------
o In BBS Set-Up when you change the path to the "Main BBS Config."
it also changes the "Activity Log" path.
o In BBS Set-Up when DROP file is "NONE" the Drop File Path is
protected.
o Added the following ZIP signature: 'MZ⌡'^A^^' '^A
o Added support for @NODE@ in the TS5.LST and TS5.LOG files in the
"File Path Set-Up". For example you can now have "TS5_LST.@NODE@"
or "TS5_LOG.@NODE@" and TranScan will write seperate files for
each node. This will avoid potential SHARE violations.
"TS5_LST.@NODE@" and "TS5_LOG.@NODE@" are now the default too.
o Added support for environment variables like %WCNODEID% in all
file paths. Macros work too. The possibilities are now endless.
For example you could create seperate file comments for each node
on your BBS.
o Added feature to "Msg. Set-Up" that allows you to "Do Not send
THANKS messages" to users.
o Added support for DLLs in Date Testing and Stamping. TranScan now
evaluates OldestEXE and YoungestEXE based on the presence of files
in this order: EXE, COM, DLL, BAT.
o Added support for EXPAND.EXE which is available with DOS 5+ for
extracting many WINDOWS files.
o Added support for Integrity Master virus scanner by Wolfgang
Stiller.
o Added the TS5.EL file which is a list of external program error
codes and their meaning. If this file is present in the same
directory as TS5.EXE it will display a verbal reason for the
errorlevel instead of just the errorlevel. For example, if SCAN.EXE
exits with an errorlevel of "8" and the TS5.EL file is present it
would display:
SCAN.EXE Error: SCAN.DAT or NAMES.DAT file missing (8)
instead of:
SCAN.EXE Error: 8
This will be displayed on the Status line, in the TS5.LOG or
TS5_LOG.x file, and in the TS5.BAD file. It is hoped that many
of you will be able to understand and correct the problem without
a costly call to our tech support number.
Wildcat v4+ Support:
-------------------
TranScan v5.07 fully supports Wildcat v4. It processes files
on or off-line, imports FILE_ID.DIZ or DESC.SDI files, GIF comments
and resolutions, and sends messages to the caller. It displays
ASCI, ANSI or RIP based on the caller's selection.
Installing TranScan with Wildcat v4 is incredibly simple if you
follow these guidelines:
1. Let TranScan create all batch files for you. You should
have a FILEDESC.BAT file (no RUN files) and it should say:
if exist %1 <drive:><path>TS5.EXE %1
You should have a SCANFILE.BAT file (no RUN files) and it
should say:
if exist FILEDESC.BAD ren FILEDESC.BAD SCANFILE.BAD
2. Your POSTCALL.BAT should include the line:
<drive:><path>\TS5.EXE /L
3. In TranScan's BBS set-up make sure you select Wildcat v4+,
DOOR.SYS, and that your "Main BBS Config. file" is correct.
The "Drop File Path" MUST be left BLANK!
4. If you want TranScan to import GIF comments or GIF resolutions
you MUST do this OFF-LINE. So make sure you have the following
BBS Option checked:
[X] JPG to GIF, GIF to JPG, or GIFLite Offline.
5. If you prefer the way TranScan formats descriptions you must
do some type of processing offline. I recommed running a
secondary scanner. This will force TranScan to again uncompress
the file reading the FILE_ID.DIZ or DESC.SDI file and then
formatting it and importing it into Wildcat. To run a secondary
scanner go to TranScan's configuration, select "Scanner Set-Up"
and mark one of the scanners as follows:
[X] Secondary Off-Line Scanner
A "2" should appear next to the scanner's name.
6. For the messages to work properly you MUST copy the *.IMP files
(that were in the MSG.ZIP file) to your MSG directory. If you
have never used the Wildcat *.IMP feature I strongly suggest you
read page 223 of your Wildcat v4 manual. This is one of the
best features in Wildcat (and it's been there for years, too).
7. We still recommend that you Compress / Convert Off-Line.
To do this go to TranScan's configuration and select "Default
Compressor Set-Up" and mark the following option:
[X] Compress / Convert Off-Line
8. It is NOT necessary to do ALL processing OFF-LINE. In fact you
MUST do SOME processing ON-LINE in order for Wildcat to be able
to import the FILE_ID.DIZ or DESC.SDI files. Therefore, we
recommend that you DO NOT set the "Min. Sec. for processing
ALL OffLine" below "9999" at the BBS Set-Up. If you decide to
process all files OFF-LINE by setting this to "0" we recommend
that you delete the FILEDESC.BAD file and run TranScan from
the SCANFILE.BAT instead.
After extensive testing we have the following observations about
Wildcat v4+:
1. You CAN run TranScan in the SCANFILE.BAT and it will successfully
update the file database but Wildcat WILL return the short and
long descriptions to their original state UNLESS the filename
changes. For this reason we recommend running TranScan in the
FILEDESC.BAT.
2. Page 384 of MSI's Wildcat! v4 SysOp Guide refers numerous times
to a DESCFILE.BAT file. This is a typo! It should be
FILEDESC.BAT. If you use TranScan in the FILEDESC.BAT it will
not be necessary to use their example using PKUNZIP.
3. Are tired of seeing the following message?
"No description left by YOUR NAME, press I for information."
This message was NOT left by TranScan! This message is left
by Wildcat and can be changed by changing the Wildcat prompts
#1234 and #1235. What should you change them to? I recommend
leaving them blank.
4. If you use TranScan's "Min. Sec. for processing ALL OffLine"
by setting it to "0" then I recommend that you do not use the
FILEDESC.BAT but run TranScan in your SCANFILE.BAT as follows:
if exist %1 <drive:><path>TS5.EXE %1
This will keep the user from being prompted for each description
that we know won't be found because TranScan didn't run to
create it.
5. There is at least one know case where Wildcat v4 does not pass
a filename to the FILEDESC.BAT or SCANFILE.BAT. This is why
we recommend adding "if exist %1" to the line immediately
preceeding the "<drive:><path>TS5.EXE %1". Failing to do so
may cause TranScan to start in menu mode and stay that way until
you press <Esc>.
Wildcat v4 Problem Fixes:
-------------------------
o TranScan v5.06 was released just one day before MSI released
actual source code to 3rd party developers. In TranScan v5.07
we have replaced all our code with theirs with the hope of being
100% compatible.
o Maximum Short Description for Wildcat changed back to 60.
o Extra lines in Long Description were not added correctly.
o Extra long FILE_ID.DIZ files (over 15 lines) will no longer
add strange garbage to your file database.
o Corrected logic so that offline processing completes ALL tasks.
o In BBS Set-Up changed WC4's default "Main BBS COnfig." to
"C:\WILDCAT\MAKEWILD.DAT" instead of "C:\WC40\MAKEWILD.DAT".
o In BBS Set-Up changed WC4's default "Activity Log" to
"C:\WILDCAT\ACTIVITY.@NODE@ instead of "C:\wc40\activity.@node@".
o TranScan now handles the SET WCMDM= environment variable even if
it includes a file path or extension (which, BTW, it should not).
o TranScan was leaving an extra space at the beginning of the long
and short description. It will no longer do this.
General Problem Fixes:
----------------------
o /CFG: switch was conflicting with the /C<ext> switch.
o /C<ext> would not keep the default value if <ext> was not valid.
o Imbedded GIF/JPG files are no longer compressed or converted.
o ARJ/ZIP comments are no longer added to imbedded files.
o Now always assumes ANSI caller unless DROP file specifies ASCII.
o Removed the "Save" button from all sub-menu screens like "File
Desc. Set-Up", "Msg. Set-Up", "Comressors", "UnComressors", and
"Signatures". You must SAVE the settings at the MAIN screens.
o Corrected the problem where TranScan was not deleting ReadOnly
files from temporary directories.
o Corrected problem where TranScan was not deleting recursed
directories more than one level deap from temporary directory.
o When saving a config. if there is not enough memory to open the
file selector it will default to the current config. file.
TranScan v5.06 (August 1, 1994)

Enhancements:

o TranScan now detects the TS5.LST file when you enter menu mode
and prompts you to do your Off-Line processing now.
o TranScan now detects the TS5.BAD file (which includes more
info now too) and prompts you to display it to determine why
files failed recently.
o Many Set-Up screens now use red asterisks (*) beside filenames to
indicate "File Not Found".
o Now displays ASCII if the caller is not color or RIP.
PCBoard Enhancements & Problem Fixes:

o TranScan was not working properly in LOCAL mode.
Wildcat v4+ Support:
--------------------
TranScan v5.06 now works with the new Wildcat v4+ from Mustang
Software, Inc. Simply select Wildcat 4+ from the BBS Set-Up
menu and make sure your Main "BBS Config. Path" is set correctly.

General Problem Fixes:
----------------------
o TS5Q.EXE was not calculating and recording the CRCs for Non-Zip
files.
o If a file failed durring On-Line processing it was still being
added to the list for Off-Line processing. This was fixed.
Using TranScan with SCAN.EXE v2+ by McAfee & Associates
-------------------------------------------------------
The correct command line for using TranScan with the new SCAN.EXE
by McAfee is as follows:
SCAN.EXE ~F /NOMEM /SUB /STD
If you want ALL files and not just executables scanned then remove
the /STD. There is also a command line option /FAST that will
speed up the scan but it might miss a few viruses. Use this option
at your own risk. /NOPAUSE and /NOEXPIRE or no longer supported
in this new version of SCAN.EXE.
If after changing this command line you receive a "SCAN.EXE error: 2"
then you have an older copy of SCAN.EXE on your system. Remove
the older version.
TranScan v5.05 (June 5, 1994)

General Problem Fixes:

o Some GIF and JPG files were not being identified based on their
signatures. These files are identified by their extensions now
too.
o Fixed problem where date testing was not always ignored on GIF
and JPG files when that option was checked.
PCBoard Enhancements & Problem Fixes:

o Messages were not being sent to users correctly through PPE.
o User description was being deleted if a FILE_ID.DIZ, DESC.SDI,
or GIF comment description was not available for importing.
TranScan v5.04 (May 17, 1994)

General Problem Fixes:
----------------------
o Fixed a "Heap Leak" problem in the ZIP comment routines. (This
is the problem many of you reported where TranScan slowly ran
out of memory).
Enhancements:
-------------
o Added a TranScan Quick Scan utiltiy TS5Q.EXE that will quickly
add files to the duplicate file database. See TS5Q.DOC for more
information.
o A number of routines were optimized to provide even more
speed to TranScan.
o Many improvements were made to the GIF/JPG processing
routines. One option added is the ability to STRIP the
GIF comment from the GIF file. Also added was the displaying
of GIF Resolution and whether or not the file was GifLited in
the TS5.LOG file.
o Changes were made to routines affecting the TS5.DID and
TS5.LST files. These included writing the NEW filename of
files converted to these lists instead of the original file
name. Failed files are NOT written to the TS5.DID list.
o Added additional COM routines to support Int14 ports. This
should only be selected if UART proves unsuccessful. It also
supports Irq values greater than 7.
o Improved DUPE testing. When a file is failed for DUPEs the
percentage of DUPEs is reported in the TS5.LOG file. Failed
files are not added to the DUPE database.
PCBoard Enhancements & Problem Fixes:

o Improved FOSSIL support for "Willie's Fossil Driver" used by
many PCBoard SysOps.
o RIP Graphics was not properly detected for all callers.
Wildcat Enhancements & Problem Fixes:
-------------------------------------
o Added routines to AUTOMATICALLY create the SCANFILE.BAT file
and add TranScan to the POSTCALL.BAT file for Wildcat in the
Quick Set-Up.
TranScan v5.03 (May 2, 1994)

General Problem Fixes:

o Fixed problem with strange characters appearing in the long
descriptions in BBS databases and lists.
o TranScan was converting imbedded archives regardless of the
configuration setting.

o On Picklists TranScan displays the filename (i.e. "PKZIP.EXE")
even if you fill in the complete paths on the command lines.
Direct addressing was also causing some eroneous "file path not
found" messages.
o Added a warning bell that sounds on the local console every time
a file is failed. This bell can be turned off from the command
line with the following switch:
/NOBELL
o Added ALT-L as a hot key available from any menu or configuration
screen. This hot key instantly displays the TS5.LOG file which
is filled with helpful information about every file processed.
o Improved and optimized date testing routines.
TranScan v5.02 (April 25, 1994)

PCBoard Problem Fixes:

o The UPDESC. file is now written to the right directory (%3)
which insures that the FILE_ID.DIZ, DESC.SDI and GIF Comments
are imported into the file listing.
o /CNONE is no longer necessary if you are using PCBoard 15.1+
because PCBoard 15.1+ supports the converting of files
during the PCBTEST.BAT process.
o If the "Drop File Path" is not defined in the TS5 "BBS Set-Up" it
will default to the current directory. This should work fine
if you do not change directory before running TS5.EXE in your
PCBTEST.BAT file.
o The TS5.PPL was not included in the original archive. It will
be created as you run the PATCH program.
Wildcat Problem Fixes:

o Added two new command line switches:
/NOXMS tells TranScan to NOT use XMS memory
/NOEMS tells TranScan to NOT use EMS memory
TranScan v5.01 (April 13, 1994)

o "Swap file not found." error fixed. This was caused when
SCAN.EXE, PKUNZIP.EXE, etc. were found in the same directory
that TranScan was started from.
o Run Time Error 204 at 1087:0669 fixed.
o Message Conference in BBS Set-Up was not saved correctly.
o GIF Descriptions were not being imported correctly.
o GIFLite, GIF2JPG and JPG2GIF were not being processed off-line
even if this option is selected.
o GIF file date test method was not ignored even when this option
was selected.
o In "Default Compressor Set-Up" the "Editor" button was not working
at the "Fail Archives with files in this list" prompt.
o If "Convert Imbedded Compressed Files" was off TranScan would
not recompress files either. This also caused files in the
TS5.DEL list not to be deleted.
o COM output was not always displaying in some Non-Standard IRQ
situations.
GAP Problem Fixes:
------------------
o GAP passes a RIP id to DOOR.SYS if this option is turned on
from GAP's configuration. This allows the displaying of
TranScan's RIP graphics display.
o TranScan was occasionally creating an empty DESC.SDI even
if there was not FILE_ID.DIZ, DESC.SDI, or GIF Comment.
Wildcat Problem Fixes:
----------------------
o TranScan would lock up durring local upload.
o Wildcat Status Line showed "(LOCAL)" even when caller was
not local.
o GIF Resolution when "Right" was selected was not formatting
correctly.
o "Min. Security Level" option on BBS Set-Up was not working
correctly.
New Features Added:

o Display Drop File type on Configuration Menu.
o "Load Config." now defaults to the directory where TS5 is
located and "*.CFG".
TranScan v5.00 (April 1, 1994)

You can include this environment variable before running
TranScan to use a different TranScan configuration file.
Just include the full path and filename to the new config-
uration file. TranScan will create this file if it does
not exist and you can configure it. For example:
SET TSCFG=C:\WC30\TS5A.CFG
SET TSPORT=

You can include this environment variable before running
your BBS in a multi-node environment so that when TranScan
runs it receives the correct port information for that
node. The command parameters are exactly like those for
the command line:
SET TSPORT=P<com>[,Base][,IRQ][,RtsCts]
