in the latest revision of the TranScan v5.00 manual. Also, see
the BBS.DOC file for the latest information on running TranScan

What's New in v5.12 (02/25/95)

o "Unable to Delete Key from Index #10220" error experienced by some
Wildcat v4+ users should be eliminated.
o The TS5.DID file should work once again for those of you using
Wildcat v3+ or v4+.
o DESC.SDI files can now be imported into the archive based on the
description left by the user with Wildcat v4+. The "No description
left by..." messages should not be imported.
o Some users were reporting "Zip Comment Error = 103". This was
caused when a ZIP file's attribute was marked as ReadOnly. TranScan
now saves the file attribute, changes it to ReadWrite, adds the
ZIP comment, then returns the attribute to it's original state. This
not only will eliminate the "103" errors but it should force your ZIP
comment on all uploads regarless of their file attributes.
o Several users have reported seeing a REGISTERED version of TranScan
complete with registration #542 floating around. This patch cripples
TranScan for anyone using this registration code. :)
Upgrade Patch Backup:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All Upgrade patches now create a BACKUP of the original files in a
BACKUP sub directory below your TranScan directory. If TranScan
updates the version of your TS5.CFG file it will also store a backup
of this file there. A UNPATCH.BAK file is also created. To restore
a backup rename the UNPATCH.BAK file to UNPATCH.BAT and then type
UNPATCH.
New General Features:

o Simplified the "Load Config" and "Save Config." options. (5.11)
o "GIF Integrity Testing [Internal]" defaults to ON if any of the
other options that need it are on. (5.11)
o Added support for RAR Archiver v1.51. (5.10)
o Feature added so that "RTSCTS" can be used specifically instead
of "T" on the "/Px" command line option. (5.10)
o Memory requirements reduced substantially. (5.10)
o Added option to "Default Compressor Set-Up" as follows:

If this option is selected and "Compress Imbedded Compressed
Files" is selected then the windows files will be converted to
your default compression. I recommend that you DO NOT select
this option because it WILL mess up the INSTALL process for
these windows files. But, the option is there! (5.09)
o Optimized the central routine and saved approximately 1/3 second
per file processed including internal files. THAT IS FAST! (5.08)
o Completely rewrote the GIF testing routines. (5.08)
o Rewrote routines for testing YoungestEXE and OldestEXE. (5.08)
o Decreased mandatory memory consumption considerably. Of course
the less memory it has available the SLOWER it will perform. If
you have extra memory it will take full advantage of it. (5.08)
o Added additional logging to the Date Testing. It will now log
the name of the file and the filedate that failed the date

o Improved error reporting in TS5.ERR file. It now includes the
program, version, date, time, memory, and error message. (5.08)

o Added support for environment variables like %WCNODEID% in all
file paths. Macros work too. The possibilities are now endless.
For example you could create seperate file comments for each node
on your BBS. (5.07)
o Added feature to "Msg. Set-Up" that allows you to "Do Not send
THANKS messages" to users. (5.07)
o Added support for DLLs in Date Testing and Stamping. TranScan now
evaluates OldestEXE and YoungestEXE based on the presence of files
in this order: EXE, COM, DLL, BAT. (5.07)
o Added support for EXPAND.EXE which is available with DOS 5+ for
extracting many WINDOWS files. (5.07)
o Added support for Integrity Master virus scanner by Wolfgang
Stiller. (5.07)
o Added the TS5.EL file which is a list of external program error
codes and their meaning. If this file is present in the same
directory as TS5.EXE it will display a verbal reason for the
errorlevel instead of just the errorlevel. For example, if SCAN.EXE
exits with an errorlevel of "8" and the TS5.EL file is present it
would display:
SCAN.EXE Error: SCAN.DAT or NAMES.DAT file missing (8)
instead of:
SCAN.EXE Error: 8
This will be displayed on the Status line, in the TS5.LOG or
TS5_LOG.x file, and in the TS5.BAD file. It is hoped that many
of you will be able to understand and correct the problem without
a costly call to our tech support number. (5.07)
o TranScan now detects the TS5_LST.x file when you enter menu mode
and prompts you to do your OFF-LINE processing NOW. (5.06)
o TranScan now detects the TS5.BAD file (which includes more info
now too) and prompts you do display it to determine why files
failed recently. (5.06)
o Many Set-Up screens now use red asterisks (*) beside filenames to
indicate "File Not Found". (5.06)
o TranScan now displays ASCII if the caller is not ANSI or RIP. (5.06)
o Added a TranScan Quick Scan utility TS5Q.EXE that will quickly
add files to the duplicate file database. See TS5Q.DOC for
more information. (5.05)
o A number of routines were optimized to provide even more speed to
TranScan. (5.05)
o Many improvements were made to the GIF/JPG processing routines.
One option added is the ability to STRIP the GIF comment from the
GIF file. Also added was the displaying of GIF Resolution and
whether or not the file was GIFLited in the TS5.LOG file. (5.05)
o Changes were made to routines affecting the TS5.DID and TS5.LST
files. These included writing the NEW filename of the files
converted to these lists instead of the original file name. Failed
files are NOT written to the TS5.DID list. (5.05)
o Improved DUPE testing. When a file is failed for DUPEs the
percentage of DUPEs is reported in the TS5.LOG file. Failed files
are not added to the DUPE database. (5.05)
o On Picklists TranScan displays the filename (i.e. "PKZIP.EXE")
even if you fill in the complete paths on the command lines. Direct
addressing was also causing some eroneous "file path not found"
messages. (5.03)
o Added a waring bell that sounds on the local console every time a
file is failed. This bell can be turned off from the command line
with the following switch:
/NOBELL
o Added ALT-L as a hot key available from any menu or configuration
screen. This hot key instantly displays the TS5.LOG file which
is filled with helpful information about every file processed. (5.03)
o Improved and optimized date testing routines. (5.03)
o Added two new command line switches:
/NOXMS tells TranScan to NOT use XMS memory
/NOEMS tells TranScan to NOT use EMS memory
(5.02)
o Display Drop File type on Configuration Menu.
o Added support for two new environment variables. (5.00)
SET TSCFG=
----------
You can include this environment variable before running TranScan
to use a different TranScan configurtion file. Just include the
full path and filename to the new configuration file. TranScan
will create this file if it does not exist and you can configure it.
For example:
SET TSCFG=C:\WC30\TS5A.CFG
SET TSPORT=
-----------
You can include this environment variable before running your BBS
in a multi-none environment so that when TranScan runs it receives
the correct port information for that node. The command parameters
are exactly like those for the command line:
SET TSPORT=P<com>[,Base][,IRQ][,RtsCts]
For example:
SET TSPORT=P2,$02F8,3,T
Installing TranScan with Wildcat v4.01 is incrediby simple if you
follow these guidelines:
1. Let TranScan create all batch files for you. You should NOT
have a FILEDESC.BAT file (no RUN files either). You SHOULD
have a SCANFILE.BAT file (no RUN files) and it should say:
<drive:><path>TS5.EXE %1
2. Your POSTCALL.BAT should include the line:
<drive:><path>TS5.EXE /L
3. In TranScan's BBS Set-Up make sure you select Wildcat v4+,
DOOR.SYS, and that your "Main BBS Config. file" is correct.
4. For the messages to work properly you MUST copy the *.IMP
files (that were in the MSG.ZIP file) to your MSG directory.
If you have never used the Wildcat *.IMP feature I strongly
suggest you read page 223 of your Wildcat v4 manual. This
is one of the best features in Wildcat (and it's been there
for years, too).
New Wildcat v4.01+ Features:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
o From the "BBS Set-Up" screen "DROP File Path" is now hidden when
Wildcat v4+ is selected because it SHOULD be BLANK. (5.11)
o For best results you should run TranScan in your SCANFILE.BAT and
NOT in your FILEDESC.BAT. Your SCANFILE.BAT should be ONLY one
line as follows:
<drive:><path>TS5.EXE %1
You can run TranScan from your FILEDESC.BAT with the same command
line but many options will be forced OFF-LINE. If you run it in
the FILEDESC.BAT you SHOULD NOT have a SCANFILE.BAT at all.
Regardless of which method you choose you should run TranScan from
your POSTCALL.BAT with the following command line:
<drive:><path>TS5.EXE /L
Or you can get a little fancier by checking for the existence of
the TS5_LST.x file as follows:
IF EXIST <drive:><path>TS5_LST.%WCNODEID% <drive:><path>TS5.EXE /L

o TranScan WILL NOT allow ON-LINE converting if run in the
FILEDESC.BAT. It will force the creation of the TS5_LST.x file
so you will have to run TS5 /L in your POSTCALL.BAT or a daily
event. It will export the FILE_ID.DIZ to the NODEx directory but
it WILL NOT however export GIF Descriptions or Resolutions in
the FILEDESC.BAT. It is also no longer necessary to have a
SCANFILE.BAT if you run TS5.EXE in the FILEDESC.BAT. Why? If
a file fails then TranScan creates a SCANFILE.RUN file in the
proper NODEx directory as follows:
ECHO File Failed!>SCANFILE.BAD
DEL SCANFILE.RUN
This also eliminates the need to run the SCANFILE.RUN/BAT unless
the file has actually failed. Of course you need to delete your
SCANFILE.BAT for this to work correctly. If you do not delete
your SCANFILE.BAT then TranScan will create a SCANFILE.RUN in the
proper NODEx directory as follows:
DEL SCANFILE.RUN
This insures that your original SCANFILE.BAT is not run. (5.11)
o Now about the messages. If ANY processing is to be done OFF-LINE
the messages will be sent only OFF-LINE. Why? If a problem occurs
OFF-LINE you would hate to send them a "Thank You" message and
then send them a "File Failed!" message. (5.11)
o Feature added to provide messages to callers even if ALL processing
is completed OFF-LINE. Message is addressed to the person who
"Uploaded" the file. (5.10)
o TranScan now scans uploads that have been "Overwritten". In
other words, if it detects that the file is being scanned ON-LINE
and the file already appears in the TS5.DID list it will go ahead
and process it, however, it will temporarily turn of DUPE testing
for that file. (5.11)
o TranScan now looks for "No description left by" in the short
description and WILL NOT create a DESC.SDI file if this description
is the only one present. (5.11)
Using TranScan with Wildcat v4.10
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following notes are on Wildcat v4.10's new GROUP feature:
------------------------------------------------------------
1) It doesn't work quite like it should. Because of several
problems we encountered durring testing we would recommend
that you DO NOT allow uploads to a file area in any group
except your ALLFILES or default group.
2) FILEDESC.BAT doesn't get called when uploading to a file
area in any GROUP except the ALLFILES or default group.
3) SCANFILE.BAT does get called when uploading to a file area
in any GROUP but Wildcat v4.10 only gives the file area
(as %1) and not the filename. When processing uploads to
the ALLFILES or default group Wildcat v4.10 gives the
filename (as %1) and the file area (as %2).
4) Uploading to a file area path defined with a [GROUP] name
such as [TEST]\TEMP\ doesn't work at all. Changing the
file area path to C:\TEMP\ works fine.
Using TranScan with Wildcat v4.11 & v4.12
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Groups work correctly in Wildcat v4.11 & v4.12. You should be
able to define an upload area in a file group.
Using TranScan with SCAN.EXE v2+ by McAfee & Associates:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The correct command line for using TranScan with the new SCAN.EXE
by McAfee is as follows:
SCAN.EXE ~F /NOMEM /SUB /STD
If you want ALL files and not just executable files scanned then
remove the /STD. There is also a command line option /FAST that
will speed up the scan but it might miss a few viruses. Use this
option at your own risk. /NOPAUSE and /NOEXPIRE or no longer
supported in this new version of SCAN.EXE.
If after changing this command line you receive a
SCAN.EXE error: A VirusScan database *.DAT file corrupted (2)
then you probably have an older copy of SCAN.EXE on your system.
Remove the older version.
Another common error message is
SCAN.EXE error: SCAN.DAT or NAMES.DAT file missing (8)
The new version of SCAN must have the SCAN.EXE, SCAN.DAT, and
NAMES.DAT files in the same directory to work properly. The older
version of SCAN only required SCAN.EXE.
General Problem Fixes:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
o Corrected problem with GIF/JPG conversion routines. They were
causing some runtime errors and occasional lock-ups. (5.10)
o For non archive files if one of the date macros was used in the
extended description the date would be blank. It will now display
the original file date instead. (5.10)
o Added routines to check for invalid DROP file path. It would
sometimes lockup if a user defined a drop file path including
"%" environment variables that had not been defined. (5.10)
o Fixed the EXPAND feature. (5.09)
o Fixed several problems in the "GIF Integrity Test [Internal]"
routines. (5.09)
o Minor change to overlay routines to recognize the overlay path.
This should help some network users who have unusual drive
mappings. (5.08)
o TranScan used to lock up if some of the config. fields were
blank. (5.08)
o Fixed the problem with the EXPAND.EXE command lines. They should
now read: EXPAND.EXE ~A ~E (5.08)
o Fixed a problem with TranScan locking up before exiting if the
caller is ASCII. (5.08)
o When using TBScan and IMScan (which use the full screen) TranScan
was updating the whole screen except the filename in the little
floppy disk and the clock. It now does both as it redraws the
screen. (5.08)
o Adding full path information to any program in the set-up was
causing problems. (5.08)
o If a file FAILS for any reason the entries will no longer be
added to the duplicate file database. (5.08)
o /CFG: switch was conflicting with the /C<ext> switch. (5.07)
o /C<ext> would not keep the default value if <ext> was not
valid. (5.07)
o Imbedded GIF/JPG files are no longer compressed or converted. (5.07)
o ARJ/ZIP comments are no longer added to imbedded files. (5.07)
o Now always assumes ANSI caller unless DROP file specifies
ASCII. (5.07)
o Removed the "Save" button from all sub-menu screens like "File
Desc. Set-Up", "Msg. Set-Up", "Comressors", "UnComressors", and
"Signatures". You must SAVE the settings at the MAIN screens. (5.07)
o Corrected the problem where TranScan was not deleting ReadOnly
files from temporary directories. (5.07)
o Corrected problem where TranScan was not deleting recursed
directories more than one level deap from temporary directory. (5.07)
o When saving a config. if there is not enough memory to open the
file selector it will default to the current config. file. (5.07)
o Some GIF and JPG files were not being identified based on their
signatures. These files are identified by their extensions now
too. (5.05)
o Fixed problem where date testing was not always ignored on GIF
and JPG files when that option was checked. (5.05)
o Fixed a "Heap Leak" problem in the ZIP comment routines. (This
is the problem many of you reported where TranScan slowly ran
out of memory). (5.04)
o TranScan was converting imbedded archives regardless of the
configuration settings. (5.03)
o Several RunTime Errors were fixed. (5.02)
o "Swap file not found." error fixed. This was caused when
SCAN.EXE, PKUNZIP.EXE, etc. were found in the same directory
that TranScan was started from. (5.01)
o Run Time Error 204 at 1087:0669 fixed. (5.01)
o Message Conference in BBS Set-Up was not saved correctly. (5.01)
o GIF Descriptions were not being imported correctly. (5.01)
o GIFLite, GIF2JPG and JPG2GIF were not being processed off-line
even if this option is selected. (5.01)
o GIF file date test method was not ignored even when this option
was selected. (5.01)
o In "Default Compressor Set-Up" the "Editor" button was not working
at the "Fail Archives with files in this list" prompt. (5.01)
o If "Convert Imbedded Compressed Files" was off TranScan would
not recompress files either. This also caused files in the
TS5.DEL list not to be deleted. (5.01)
o COM output was not always displaying in some Non-Standard IRQ
situations. (5.01)
Wildcat v4+ Problem Fixes:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
o Fixed problem caused by a bug in OS/2 Warp. (5.10)
o Added new routines from MSI for Wildcat v4.01. TranScan should
now work with the msg locking provided to allow wcPACK to work
while the BBS is still up. (5.10)
o Fixed problem where TranScan would not send messages if any
conference other than "0" was used. (5.10)
o Files converted by GIF2JPG or JPG2GIF should now be updated in
the database correctly. (5.10)
o Fixed a problem where TranScan was not finding the UserID number
when Orphan files were added to the database. (5.08)
o Corrected problem updating Wildcat file database when adding and
converting orphan files at the same time. (5.08)
o "(AddFile) IsamError=0" in the TS5.ERR file was actually a NO
ERROR situtation. It is no longer reported. (5.08)
o Corrected problem with messages not always sent to the user. (5.08)
o LASTCALL file for sending only one THANKS.IMP message was not
working correctly with Wildcat v4. (5.08)
o TranScan v5.06 was released just one day before MSI released
actual source code to 3rd party developers. In TranScan v5.07
we have replaced all our code with theirs with the hope of being
100% compatible. (5.07)
o Maximum Short Description for Wildcat changed back to 60.
o Extra lines in Long Description were not added correctly. (5.07)
o Extra long FILE_ID.DIZ files (over 15 lines) will no longer add
strange garbage to your file database. (5.07)
o Corrected logic so that offline processing completes ALL tasks. (5.07)
o In BBS Set-Up changed WC4's default "Main BBS Config." to
"C:\WILDCAT\MAKEWILD.DAT" instead of "C:\WC40\MAKEWILD.DAT". (5.07)
o In BBS Set-Up changed WC4's default "Activity Log" to
"C:\WILDCAT\ACTIVITY.@NODE@ instead of
"C:\WC40\ACTIVITY.@NODE@". (5.07)
o TranScan now handles the SET WCMDM= environment variable even if
it includes a file path or extension (which, BTW, it should
not). (5.07)
o TranScan was leaving an extra space at the beginning of the long
and short description. It will no longer do this. (5.07)
o TranScan would lock up durring local upload. (5.01)
o Wildcat Status Line showed "(LOCAL)" even when caller was
not local. (5.01)
o GIF Resolution when "Right" was selected was not formatting
correctly. (5.01)
o "Min. Security Level" option on BBS Set-Up was not working
correctly. (5.01)
Wildcat v3+ Problem Fixes:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
o It seems that MSI used the same constant names but different
values between wc3 and wc4 in their provided source code. So
files failed in wc30 were marked "off-line" instead of "failed
scan" like they should have been. This has been corrected. (5.09)
PCBoard Problem Fixes:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
o TranScan was not working properly in LOCAL mode. (5.06)
o Messages were not being sent to users correctly through PPE. (5.05)
o User description was being deleted if a FILE_ID.DIZ, DESC.SDI,
or GIF comment description was not available for importing. (5.05)
o Improved FOSSIL support for "Willie's Fossil Driver" used by
many PCBoard SysOps. (5.03)
o RIP Graphics was not properly detected for all callers. (5.03)
o The UPDESC. file is now written to the right directory (%3)
which insures that the FILE_ID.DIZ, DESC.SDI and GIF Comments
are imported into the file listing. (5.02)
o /CNONE is no longer necessary if you are using PCBoard 15.1+
because PCBoard 15.1+ supports the converting of files
during the PCBTEST.BAT process. (5.02)
o If the "Drop File Path" is not defined in the TS5 "BBS Set-Up" it
will default to the current directory. This should work fine
if you do not change directory before running TS5.EXE in your
PCBTEST.BAT file. (5.02)
o The TS5.PPL was not included in the original archive. It will
be created as you run the PATCH program. (5.02)
GAP Problem Fixes:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
o GAP passes a RIP id to DOOR.SYS if this option is turned on
from GAP's configuration. This allows the displaying of
TranScan's RIP graphics display. (5.01)
o TranScan was occasionally creating an empty DESC.SDI even
if there was not FILE_ID.DIZ, DESC.SDI, or GIF Comment. (5.01)
